The width of the buffer area of a holding pattern is primarily set to ensure safe separation from potential obstacles or other air traffic while the aircraft is in the hold. A standard buffer width of 5 nautical miles is typically applied around the holding pattern. This distance is considered sufficient to maintain situational awareness and safety margins based on the aircraft's ability to maneuver and the operational environment of the holding pattern.

This 5 nautical mile buffer accommodates the aircraft's turn radius and allows for adjustments in navigation, especially in busy terminal airspace where multiple aircraft may be holding in the same vicinity. It helps mitigate risks associated with wake turbulence and provides separation from any surrounding airspace constraints, ensuring a safer operational environment for all aircraft involved. As a result, this standard is an essential aspect of air traffic management practices.
